Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe receives first England call-up as Marcus Rashford withdraws from squad

With Marcus Rashford, James Ward-Prowse, Mason Mount, and Luke Shaw all suffering for fitness ahead of England’s World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino, Emile Smith Rowe has been called up for the first time.

Smith Rowe has had a fantastic start to the season with Arsenal, scoring four goals and providing two assists in the Premier League, and was chosen in Lee Carsley’s Under-21 squad at the start of the season.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who came through Arsenal’s youth system, has been promoted to Gareth Southgate’s senior team at St. George’s Park and will be eager to participate in England’s double-header.

Rashford has just recently recovered from a shoulder injury, but he has been sick and has opted to withdraw from international duty in order to focus on his recuperation.

United and England agreed that Rashford should continue working on his fitness at Carrington rather than risking his place in the Three Lions’ next qualifiers.

Sickness has also ruled out Southampton captain Ward-Prowse, while Mount’s arrival to England’s training camp has been delayed owing to recent dental surgery.

Left-back for Manchester United Shaw, meantime, is undergoing concussion treatment in Manchester after a clash with Rodri during Saturday’s Old Trafford derby.

Southgate’s side leads Group I by three points over Poland, and they only need four points from their next two games to qualify for Qatar 2022.

Rashford initially became ill while on United’s journey back from Italy after their 2-2 draw with Atalanta, according to The Telegraph.

Rashford was chosen among Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s replacements after the Red Devils were defeated 2-0 by Manchester City over the weekend. He played 70 minutes in the Champions League match.

The forward came in in the 67th minute to replace Mason Greenwood against the champions, but he was still suffering from his sickness and missed a team bonding lunch with the rest of United’s players on Thursday.

Rashford only played a few minutes for England at Euro 2020 this summer and is yet to play a full 90 minutes for his club this season.

Greenwood, Rashford’s United teammate, was left out of England’s 25-man squad announced by Southgate last week, which came as a surprise.

However, England’s head coach then claimed that the teenager had requested not to be considered so that he could focus on his club football.

Southgate added, “We had a chat before the camp in September and we came to an understanding.”

‘John McDermott [the FA’s technical director] and I went to United and had a nice conversation with Mason and his family, and we essentially decided to put this on hold until next year.’ The fall games would be abandoned.

‘He recognizes that if he establishes himself in Manchester United’s team, he will be very close to an England squad or an England team.
