Chelsea to miss four first-team players against Malmo:

Chelsea will be without up to four first-team players when they face Malmo in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Earlier on Monday, the club announced that Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Mason Mount, and Mateo Kovacic had all missed training, and the manager confirmed their absence while speaking to the press.

“Unfortunately, these four players are out,” the manager remarked in a press conference. The jury is still out. It comes as no surprise to Timo, Romelu, and Kova. Mason isn’t feeling much better.

“To put an end to any conjecture, it’s not covid; he’s negative for covid. He’s just sick and doesn’t feel well enough to train or, of course, go on the trip.”

Is Chelsea’s lack of Lukaku and Werner a problem?

Since suffering injuries against Malmo in the opposite fixture, Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner have been out. Kai Havertz, on the other hand, has done a fantastic job as the main centre-forward since then.

Havertz should do a good job up front against Malmo, but weariness could be an issue because the German has played back-to-back games.

Players like Ziyech and Pulisic can play up front, and now that the American has returned to the squad, there’s a chance he’ll be the one leading the line against Malmo.

Will Mason Mount turn out to be a flop?

Mason Mount scored again against Norwich City, but he’s been ill since then.

His absence should not pose a significant problem for the manager, since he has adequate backup in Hakim Ziyech and Hudson-Odoi. Mount’s lack of consistent game time is essentially a personal loss for him.

Who will take Mateo Kovacic’s place?

Mateo Kovacic suffered an injury in training last week, and his absence could create concern for Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

Because N’Golo Kante hasn’t been 100% fit in recent weeks, he’ll have to be used carefully. We don’t expect the midfielder to be utilized again on Tuesday after his appearance against Newcastle United on Saturday.

With Kovacic also ruled out, Jorginho will have to be partnered in central midfield by someone like Ross Barkley or Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Tuchel has the option of deploying Saul Niguez in that role as well.
