Former Chelsea and England star Joe Cole has fired a warning to Arsenal over their expectations of youngster Emile Smith Rowe
Emile Smith Rowe has had a fantastic start to life at Arsenal.
Last December, the kid shone in a 3-1 victory over Chelsea, and he’s been one of Mikel Arteta’s first choices ever since.
Smith Rowe has continued to impress for Arsenal this season, scoring five goals and assisting twice for the Gunners, who are now in fifth place in the Premier League table.
After Marcus Rashford and James Ward-Prowse withdrew due to injury, the 21-year-old was chosen in Gareth Southgate’s England team for forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against San Marino and Albania.
Joe Cole, a former Chelsea and England winger, has praised the Hale End academy graduate while cautioning Arsenal fans to keep their expectations in check in the coming years.
Cole told Coral, “I adore Smith-Rowe – I believe he’s another class.”
“Because he is becoming the focal point of Arsenal’s team, there will be a lot of pressure on his shoulders now.”
“I understand how difficult it may be for a young person to deal with. It’s a lot simpler when you have the flexibility to go out and play.
“However, Arsenal supporters are now looking on him to make the difference in games when things are going wrong, and they are expecting more.”
Smith Rowe will be hoping to make his Three Lions debut during the current international break before returning to club action in two weeks against Everton.
The Gunners next visit Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United before heading to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in a must-win match for both teams in their quest for a top-four finish.
