Chelsea beat Zenit Saint Petersburg 1-0, with Romelu Lukaku scoring the only goal of the game.
Romelu Lukaku’s second spell at Chelsea is proving to be a huge success.
Last month, the Blues paid a club-record £97.5 million to bring the 28-year-old back to Stamford Bridge following a seven-year absence.
Lukaku’s incredible goalscoring record at Inter Milan, where he scored 64 times in just 95 games, left little doubts that he would hit the back of the net on a regular basis for Thomas Tuchel’s team this season.
The former Manchester United striker has scored three Premier League goals in three games so far this season, including a goal against London rivals Arsenal in a 2-0 win and a brace against Aston Villa last weekend both in the premier league.
He now has the game’s only goal in Chelsea’s UEFA Champions League opening against Zenit Saint Petersburg of Russia, who had held the reigning European champions level for nearly 70 minutes.
Lukaku rose highest and struck a powerful header beyond Zenit goalkeeper Stanislav Kritsyuk after Spanish defender Cesar Azpilicueta sent an inch-perfect cross to the back post.
@yoomatty : “is Romelu Lukaku the greatest player to ever lace up the boots? all signs are pointing to yes.”
@MMhavertz : “how did we play last year without Lukaku.”
@_jamieCFC : “Lukaku might be the best striker in the league, and by might I mean he absolutely is.”
He seemingly sent a message to the Chelsea supporters saying;
“I’m going to do my best for the club, try as hard as i can to give my all to the club.” He also added that Chelsea is one of the best teams in the world as quoted by goal.
