Thomas Tuchel gives an update on Jules Kounde transfer deal.
Chelsea was unable to agree on a deal with Sevilla for French defender Jules Kounde during the summer transfer window.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel believes that the position at center-back has altered as a result of Trevoh Chalobah’s good showing and that a potential deal for Sevilla defender Jules Kounde will have to be reconsidered.
Chelsea made a strong attempt to bring the France international to Stamford Bridge during the summer transfer window. The Blues and the La Liga team had talked for many weeks and looked to be close to reaching a deal.
Sevilla, on the other hand, upped their asking price in the last days of the window since they had limited time to find a successor. As a consequence, Chelsea’s formal proposal was turned down.
“The Chelsea bid for Koundé last summer was fantastic, the most significant we’ve ever had – but it didn’t fit our budget,” Sevilla sports director Monchi stated in a recent interview with Canal Sur Radio. “We also got the bid at an inconvenient time.”
Fortunately, the disappointment of losing out on Kounde had been mitigated. Chalobah was given a chance to impress Tuchel during the preseason and seized it.
With his efforts on the Cobham training grounds, he pleased the German, and he appeared at ease in Chelsea’s friendlies against Bournemouth, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur.
However, the plan remained in place in early August for the 22-year-old to return to the Blues on loan before battling for a starting spot next summer. The UEFA Super Cup, on the other hand, arrived later.
Chalobah began against Villarreal in Belfast and put forth an outstanding 120-minute effort. Tuchel concluded after the encounter that the academy graduate was ready to make his Chelsea debut this season.
He has since made 10 appearances across all competitions, impressing in defense whether on the right side of the back three or in the center.
Chalobah’s hard work, devotion, and brilliance were recently rewarded with a new long-term contract. He signed a four-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at Chelsea until 2026.
With the addition of Chalobah, the Blues now have five Premier League-experienced center-backs: Cesar Azpilicueta, Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, and Chalobah.
And, before Chelsea’s match against Burnley, Tuchel was asked whether Chalobah’s inclusion in the team makes a January transfer for Kounde improbable.
Tuchel said, “I believe you should examine every transfer period.” “You can’t state what we want in the summer because we have it in the winter.” And we want to do the same things we want to do in the winter the following summer. This is not the case.
“Your view changes, players change, the group evolves, you develop an environment, you see who is totally trustworthy, and these relationships grow and ideally produce something great in the group.”
“So you can’t argue that what we attempted in the summer didn’t work, so we’ll definitely try again in the winter.” It’s like this at times. Even though we sense the same need, Trevoh is now among us, and he deserves to be here with us. It had nothing to do with whether or not we could recruit another central defender. But he took the initiative.
“The burden of duty was placed even higher on his shoulders, and he has handled it well so far. This is the scenario, and it will have an impact on our future transfer choices. It’s always this way.”
